S.M.A.R.T. WORDS OF WISDOM

In our last issue, we included pointers from our MLRC mentors and presenters. They all have a wealth of experience from teaching S.M.A.R.T. and mentoring at your schools. They often say they learn as much from all of you as you learn from us! We continue to provide pointers from our team throughout the year and here are some of those tips….

When we asked them “What is one very important reminder you’d like to share with S.M.A.R.T. teachers?” they said…

Tim Greeley

"Balance Before Roll.  I often get the question ‘Is there a specific order that the activities have to be set up in?’ My response is, the only thing you want to avoid is rolling or spinning the kids at one station and asking them to perform a balance activity at the next station. Rolling or spinning upsets the balance center of your brain, making it difficult to immediately perform balance tasks.”

Cindy Harvey

“Remember to use more INPUT, INPUT, INPUT long before any OUTPUT is expected. Kids learn and retain more and faster when they see and hear the answers many times before they are asked to remember and respond with an answer.”

Renae Milawski

“Good vision skills are such an essential part of a child's ability to read well.  The S.M.A.R.T. vision activities are so easy and beneficial for all students.  Remember, frequency, intensity and duration of the vision exercises!”

Be Careful What You Wish For by Cindy Harvey

Last summer, one lone kindergarten teacher from Dyersburg, Tennessee attended a S.M.A.R.T. workshop, sent by her principal to see what S.M.A.R.T. was all about. Here is her amazing story how S.M.A.R.T. took hold at her school, Dyersburg Primary School, and how they’ve kept it going strong.
